Monet had his cathedral; I have a tree — the one outside our studio…

The great thing about photographing trees is this: there is no vanity. There’s just form — and a subject that dwarfs the self.” —A friend in conversation

I took this photo near the top of one of the hills behind my friend J’s house in Rio en Medio, New Mexico. I’d marked the way back down to the trail, or so I thought, but the arroyo is deceptive at twilight… A neighbor dog, who’d patiently observed the photographic proceedings until boredom set in, escorted me back, making his way slowly enough through the thickets for me to trace his idiosyncratic path — though it took little account of the height of his follower.

I’ll be going back to New Mexico in September to attend an intensive book-making workshop in Santa Fe, organized by Alex and Rebecca Norris Webb, along with Radius Books. I’ll use the time there to focus on a new project I’ve been working on: Los Caprichos.
