The Rise and Fall of Polaroid: an interview by Mark Lamster (in the Design Observer) with Christopher Bonanos, author of Instant, the first book-length history of Polaroid—in which we learn  the connection between Polaroids and sex, Polaroids and the Kinsey researchers, Polaroids and porn. Glibness aside, Bonanos shows a healthy respect for science … and for the women scientists whose work was critical to the technological breakthrough of Polaroid film.  The interview includes some interesting reflections on Steve Jobs’ veneration of Land and on the latter’s conviction that photographic devices would become ever smaller, ever quicker, ever more intuitive. He was right.

Instant (2012) is published by Princeton Architectural Press.  A limited edition with slipcase and a second booklet of photos and text is being sold at The Impossible Project.
