The 2011 Berkeley Civic Arts Exhibition opens on Thursday, May 26, with a reception from 3–5pm at the Berkeley Civic Center (2180 Milvia Street, Berkeley, 6th floor). Mayor Tom Bates will deliver opening remarks and the exhibition’s two curators, Suzanne Tan of the Berkeley Art Center and Archana Horsting of the Kala Art Institute, will give a tour of the work on display. For those of you not aware of the dire straits in public arts funding these days, the show is remarkable for being one of a handful of exhibiting opportunities where an artist actually gets some remuneration for her inclusion. I’m pleased that three of my photographs were selected by the jury panel for the show, and am looking forward to the opening!

I’ll also be dropping by the Magnum Postcards from America pop-up gallery show at The Starline Social Club in Oakland (6–10pm). Magnum photographers included in this cross-country group expedition are: Paolo Pellegrin, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Alec Soth, and Mikhael Subotzky. I’m delighted that three of my photographs were selected for inclusion in this year’s Civic Arts Exhibition in Berkeley. A joint effort on the part of the Berkeley Art Center and Kala Art Institute, the exhibition is an annual juried competition open to all artist-residents of Berkeley. The works chosen by the jury will be hung at the Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center on November 30, 2010 and will remain on view for approximately one year. An opening celebration (TBA) will be held in the Spring of 2011.
