Man Waving (travels on the Southwest Chief and the Coast Starlight)

“People wave to trains — perhaps out of some affinity for the travelers on board or for the mere idea of travel. Whatever the reason, it’s a tenuous bond, broken the instant it’s announced. This simple gesture, fleeting and recurring, is a silent chorus that accompanies the travelers on their way to the next stop of an unknown future.” (Letter from a friend, in a somewhat romantic vein.)
