The fan-like trees at the left are known as ‘arvores-do-viajante’ (Ravenala madagascariensis). Similar in appearance to the banana tree, the species is a native of Madagascar, valued for its ornamental beauty and for its capacity to retain water — the latter characteristic important at one time for ocean-going voyagers.
